A Digital History Approach to Graphic Design History

Over the course of the semester, students looked at history through the lens of reading. Students focused specifically on four contexts — design, society, culture, and technology. They defined important events, artifacts, texts, and theories that related to reading across four eras — screens, periodicals, printed books, and codices. Looking one era at a time from the present to the past, the students created a large database of entries that served as the starting place for exploring relationships between and across contexts. Their explorations took the form of timelines, mind maps, and concept maps.
